Abstract

By using only secondary sources, this paper attempts to explore the life histories of five noncommitted Korean war prisoners who refused to choose one of two divided Koreas, and further settled in India as a neutral country. From the initial stage of their settlement in India, five Korean war ex-prisoners have been exposed to similar severe socio-cultural and economic environments and tried to struggle for their survival. Among them, two ex-prisoners like Ji, Ki-Cheol and Hyun, Dong-Hwa have become the leaders of non-resident Korean community in India since the early of 1970s, who have negotiated their ideological identities with a hard-line anti-communist country like Republic of Korea. To be specific, their acquisition of Korean passport and marriages with Korean women clearly paved the way for their accesses to various areas of Korean society, especially business area, which obviously contributed to their economic prosperity in India. Their secure and stable relationships with Korean society seem to leed them to their diehard anti-communism which have been often revealed in both their ordinary lives and formal explanation and interviews on North Korea. The different scenarios of their courses of lives among Korean war ex-prisoners settled in India seem to derive from the different way of reinterpretations and justification of 'motherland', 'ideology', and South-North confrontations'.
