초록
This paper explores the emergence of “anti-communist prisoners of war” (hereafter, “anti-communist POWs”) and their settlement process in South Korea following the Korean War. “Anti-communist POWs” refer to prisoners of war who opposed communism. Up to 35,000 “anti-communist POWs” settled in South Korea in two main routes: first, on June 18, 1953, when 27,388 North Korean soldiers escaped from their captors following President Syngman Rhee's “anti-communist POW release” event. Second, on January 20, 1954, when 7,591 North Korean soldiers, designated as non-repatriated POWs, were released at the Panmunjom DMZ (Demilitarized Zone) camp. Welcomed fervently by South Korea on June 18 and January 23, they were referred to as “anti-communist youth” and “anti-communist patriotic youth.” While most “anti-communist POWs” reportedly integrated into South Korean society by joining the South Korean Army or engaging in fervent anti-communist activism with right-wing youth organizations, this scenario only accounted for a fifth of the total number, and even those cases underwent scrutiny and verification. In reality, over 20,000 “anti-communist POWs” quietly assimilated into South Korean society, often without revealing their true identities. They adapted their means of existence according to the societal demands of South Korea, opting for silence and anonymity if they could not prove their legitimacy adequately.
