Abstract

Since 1990s, the Indian economy has shown the robust trend of growth contrasting to the fragile growth of 1980s. It would be the outcome of accelerated economic reforms since 1990s. The financial system reforms are the essential parts of them. In this paper, we examine the reforms of three major financial sectors―equities market, securities market and bank lending market. It helps predict the future of financial reforms and suggest its desirable directions. India had a very inefficient financial markets before economic reforms in 1991. Equities markets had closed and competition-restricting premodern structures. So-called "Badla" practice-a kind of means of deferring trade -endangered the whole markets' soundness. Securities market was excluded from being the windows of private sector's financing by the government's monopolistic security supply. Bank lending market had lost efficiency due to the governments severe intervention, and had too much bad asset. The financial reforms from 1992 brought significant outcomes. Equities markets have been modernized and open to competition. Securities market has restored its interest- rate-setting function. And the many of the regulations on the bank lending market have been removed. The financial reforms in India have contributed to the robust economic growth of Indian economy, and helped to absorb the external shocks. But it can't be said that financial reforms are finished, because there was no systematic program and reforms have not been sufficient comparing to the international standard. For the Indian economy to go further, sustaining reforms are still necessary. Key reforms include the reduction of fiscal deficit, the removal of public sector's vice, the discipline of market behaviour and the proper level of controls.
