Abstract

In modern storytelling, myths are regarded as one of the most original story sources. By providing motives to fantasy novels, movies, and games, it shows its value as a re‐creatable story. ‘Story value’ transcends ages and cultures, as it has the most prevalent story of human experience. As myths are the oldest stories, which have continued down to the present times, it certainly has more than its stake in terms of story value. In this perspective, Indian myths are sacred treasures in storytelling. Amongst these, Mahabharata and Ramayana are regarded to possess high story value. The reasons being are as follows: First, as both stories have been passed down spanning many years, it is already proven by the public. Second, if story has a value in its ability to incur interest of general public, both of these stories deal with hardships and struggles humans face, not omnipotent gods. Third, both of the stories deal with very basic human desires, namely money, love, power, honor and immortality. Mahabaharata and Ramayana both creates interesting storyline and characters by expressly combining three of above mentioned factors. Now, Korea is aiming to become a power house in culture contents, but our myths as a basic source is seriously lacking. In this essence, Indian myth could become an excellent alternative. Even if it is not our own, if we could find a story that would win public’s interest, we should look to exploit it to our full benefit. This kind of cultural merge could be the shortcut in creating a truly global culture contents.
