Abstract

This paper studies Indian Diaspora who emigrated from India to Fiji between the nineteenth century and the twentieth [20th] century. Indian Diaspora was consisted of the various groups by background, period and purpose of emigrants. Most of Indian Diaspora were Indenture laborer from India to work on the country's sugar plantations. There is a part of Fiji's Indian population who voluntarily migrated from Gujerat Province in India and now dominate lower, middle order commercial and mercantile functions. By 1970, when Fiji became independent of Britain, it could legitimately be described as 'three Fijis', as it was then constituted by economically distinct categories of indigenous Fijians, Europeans (mainly white people) and Indians. and the native Fijians. The existent hierarchy among these ethnic groups is a distinctive feature of the Fijian society. By the end of the 20th century, tourism was Fiji's main source of foreign exchange, so this paper studies the Fijian tourism industry on which the ethnic division and hierarchy of the society has been reflected. The paper first examines the general developing process of the industry, then focuses on the hotel industry which is a significant part of the tourism industry. In the process, the racial origins of the owners and managers of hotels are verified. In conclusion, Fiji's tourism industry can be conceptualized as a three-tiered class based on ethnics. At the apex are foreign and Europeans, At the intermediate level are Indians, At the base of the pyramid are Fijians. However Indians occupy the position near the base of the pyramid.
