Abstract

This study analyses the nature of transnationalism among Indo-Fijians living both in Fiji and the so-called Pacific Rim countries like Australia, New Zealand, USA, Canada. Due to political and economic discrimination in post-colonial Fiji, about 150,000 Indo-Fijians have migrated to the metropolitan countries of the Pacific Rim. Currently, almost one third of the total Indo-Fijian population lives outside Fiji and this proportion is likely to rise. A considerable part of Indo-Fijian population will also remain in Fiji in the long term, probably more out of necessity than choice. After Indo-Fijians' secondary migration, transnational networks have been established linking them to various Pacific Rim countries as well as Fiji. These networks function on a day-to-day basis and in various spheres of their life. Indo-Fijians abroad maintain active contact with Fiji through a variety of means: the internet, telephone, video, periodic re-visits, and by remitting money and goods to Fiji. For Instance, they send regular remittances to parents and siblings, and shoulder responsibility for schooling, weddings, and other life-cycle rituals. Fiji's importance as a central point of reference for Indo-Fijian transnational community is likely to gradually diminish with further migration and the growing number of second generation Indo-Fijians in the pacific Rim countries for whom Fiji does not have the same sentimental meaning as for their parents. The general phenomenon of a section of a scattered diaspora being transformed into a new transnational community that is widespread but closely linked merits further research.
