미술교육과 사회의 만남 - 사회재건주의 재조명을 통한 한국미술교육 고찰 -

초록

한국에서 미술교육의 사회적 책무성에 관한 논의는 문화예술교육의 시행과 함께 본격적으로 논의되었다고 볼 수 있고, 그 현상의 근간을 이루는 사상적 배경을 사회재건주의적 패러다임을 통해서 논의해 보았다. 그러나 정책이 시행된 지 거의 10년이 넘어가는 이 시점에서도 방향설정이나 철학적 성찰에 관한 부분은 그간 존재론적 차원에서 연구28)가 있었으나, 사회재건주의 관점에서 조명한 것은 이 연구가 처음 시도한 것이라 할 수 있다. 이 연구에서 문화예술교육의 추진과정에서 고려해야 하는 몇 가지 방향, 다시 말하면, 패러다임의 부재, 교육목표의 불명확화, 지역문화자원과 연계 및 사회문화예술교육 역량 미흡 등에 관한 논의들을 통해서 문화예술교육은 미술교육 논의의 내적 가치와 쟁점에 머무는 것이 아니라 사회적 논의로 그 관심을 확장하여야 하며, 교과의 사회적 정당성을 주장되어야 함을 강조한다. 이러한 측면에서 앞서 논의한 사회재건주의 관점은 문화예술교육의 발전 방향에 하나의 실마리를 제공하는 미술교육의 사회적 정당성을 확보하는 패러다임이라 본다. 21세기에 날로 가속화되고 있는 정치, 경제, 사회, 문화적 영역에서 다원화는 문화적 차이와 다양성을 인정하면서 미술교육이 사회적 정의와 균등한 기회를 부여하는데 기여해야 하는 사회적 책무성이 요구되고 있다. 이러한 측면에서 국외에서 일고 있는 “미술교육과 사회정의”에 관한 담론은 우리나라 문화예술교육 현장에서도 유효한 쟁점이라 보며, 그 근본적 철학과 실천적 프로그램을 재고해야 할 시점에 이르렀다. 이러한 논의들은 서양에서 태동한 하나의 미술교육 사상을 또다시 수용한다는 단순한 시각에서 바라보기 보다는, 20세기 초 정치․사회․경제적 변화 속에서 미술교육과 사회와의 접점을 찾고자한 사상적 배경들을 다시 읽어보고 우리나라 미술교육 현실에 비추어 재조명해 보고자 하는 것이다. 때문에 지금 여기에서 사회재건주의 담론에 대한 진화가 필요한 이유가 있는 것이다.

Abstract

The modern paradigm of art education that focused on the creative-self expressionism is questioned and the social responsibility in art education is raised in the context of Korean art education. Cultural art education that began in early 2000 has played the most important role in social function. This study explores the social function of art education based on Social Reconstruction in relation to cultural art education in Korea. First, this study investigates on the myth of art education that has prevailed in modern art education in Korea as well as the West in order to discuss the discourse of social reconstruction art education. The belief of creative-self expressionism is related to the paradigm of modern art, mystification, and originality. Second, this paper explores the social background of the social reconstruction as a consequence of the Second World War in the U.S. Exhibitions, art critics, and school art education were focused on the prevailing the status of the nation in the international society. Third, the theoretical background of social reconstruction is discussed with a focus on the thoughts of John Dewey. Dewey's philosophy on art, education, and community influenced multicultural art education. In particular, a multicultural and a social reconstructionist approach emphasizes the heighten personal ability of critical literacy and provides a critical eye towards the world in which we live. Finally, this study examines cultural art education in Korea based on the investigation of a social reconstruction perspective. Cultural art education (that has been practiced by the government for 10 years) is discussed in terms of the current status and a theoretical framework.
