Abstract

Through detailed analysis, this study seeks to elucidate points of innovation newly prepared by patterns of “counterpoles” in the poetry and prose of Kim Soo-young through convergence with the latest Western discourses. The focus of this agenda stems from the idea that, even if traces of citing Western discourses appear in his poetry and prose, holistic elucidation of his literary works can be accomplished only by examining both East Asian classics underlying his oeuvre and the context of that tradition. In the end, this study focuses its agenda on grasping points of reappropriation created through the convergence of those aspects and Western discourses and views the latter as keys to thoughts transcending the modern and contemporary eras alike. In addition, this study can be said to demonstrate faithfully, through a process of detailed analysis, that such reappropriation of Western discourses on Kim’s part established as its final instances the concept of benevolence, which originates from East Asian tradition.
