Abstract

This study investigates how reading and writing are integrated within Reading and Writing, a subject newly implemented in the 2022 Revised Korean Language Curriculum. Seven authorized textbooks were analyzed, focusing on units organized around writing for reading and reading for writing. The analysis identifies two organizational patterns. The shared type links reading and writing through a common organizer, fostering recursive development of comprehension and expression but limiting text-type diversity. The parallel type clarifies unit goals and broadens materials, yet provides fewer opportunities for reciprocal transfer. Across both types, tasks are frequently combined mechanically with limited scaffolding, and inconsistent genre treatment hinders the development of genre awareness. Future textbook development and instructional design should attend not only to text–task alignment but also to the interaction between reading and writing to strengthen learners’ genre knowledge and literacy.
