해방 후 도로 권력의 변화와 ‘지프차’ 표상
Changes in Road Power after the Liberation and the Representation of ‘Jeep’

This article focuses on the railroad as a symbol of the advent of modernity and its speed, and proposes to rethink the road as a political space after liberation and examine governmentality as a ‘road manager’, just as it identifies the characteristics of colonial modernity. Unlike railroads and trams in the era of orbital transportation, the U.S. military ‘Jeep Car’, which can travel ‘off road’, represented the new ruling power in South Korea as a cutting-edge war weapon that led to the victory of the Allied Forces and formed a cultural and spiritual U.S. military representation. However, Jeep caused various traffic accidents as an occupation force on a road that sped relentlessly on unpaved roads with a hard and enormous body. Despite the rapid increase in automobiles, the construction and management of roads were insufficient, and even during the US military regime or after the founding of the country, the government could not properly exercise the law and power to severely punish US military violations of traffic laws or unethical behavior. Therefore, U.S. military-related traffic accidents should be re-examined as social structural events that do not stop at accidental and unexpected accidents, and the situation in which the sovereignty of road control and management was layered and confusing suggests the multi-layered power of the time.
