Abstract

n the context of considering the global and domestic responses to climate change, in the line with it, there has been increasing impact on the importance of blue carbon, in particular mangroves, as one of the three major halophytes designated by the IPCC. Moreover, in a lot of cases, mangrove species are being increasingly utilised as ornamental plants and tourism resources, delivering positive aspects to varying areas. Therefore, the adaptation context of mangroves in domestic regions should become a critical issue. However, there is little empirical studies on the adaptability and projections of mangroves in Korea. This study therefore aimed to test growth characteristics of Red Mangrove (Rhizophora mangle) according to five different degrees of sea water temperature and contribute to unitilising it for mitigating climate change. The results show that first there were differences in the growth of Red Mangroves according to sea water temperature between 9℃ and 30℃, particularly, a significant difference in the amount of chlorophyll, which indicates differences in photosynthesis where average 5.56% in control group is higher than experimental group. Second, the analysis of domestic red mangrove habitats through the prediction of future sea water temperatures revealed that it would be feasible, especially along the east of the South Sea coast and Jeju Island around the year 2040 as well as the southern part of East Sea around the year 2060. Final remark is that this study sheds light on the increasing feasibility of red mangrove in domestic, contributing to mitigating climate changes. However, there are a few limitation in this study that the next future situation where red mangrove habitation becomes possible due to ongoing global warming is not desirable. Nevertheless, this study underlines significance as an overarching research for responding to climate change, aiming for mangrove species to become overriding garden plants in line with the driver change of expanding garden culture in Korea.
