Abstract

The significance of coastal ecosystems' carbon sequestration capacity, designated as 'blue carbon,' is garnering worldwide recognition in the pursuit of achieving carbon neutrality objectives to counteract climate change. The present study aims to comprehensively evaluate the potential of P. australis, a native halophyte in the Muan tidal flats of South Jeolla Province, to serve as a new carbon sink based on blue carbon. The Muan tidal flats represent a representative tidal flat ecosystem on the west coast of the Korean Peninsula. The spatial scope of this study is the reed colony formed on the intertidal mudflats in the vicinity of Bokgil-ri, Cheonggye-myeon, Muan-gun, Jeollanam-do. Field surveys were conducted from 20th March to 20th December 2024. The carbon dioxide respiration rate (SRQ_Rate) of Phragmites was measured directly in situ using a portable photosynthesis measurement system. Concurrently, environmental factors such as air and soil temperature were recorded. The collected data were then utilised to derive the primary environmental factors influencing respiration rates through correlation analysis. The total carbon storage was determined by calculating the sum of the carbon content of the reed's aboveground biomass and the carbon content of the rhizosphere soil. The estimation of soil carbon storage was based on prior research. Finally, the economic value of the reed community was assessed by applying the carbon credit price traded on a representative platform of the international voluntary carbon market to the calculated carbon storage (tCO₂/ha). The results demonstrated that, firstly, an analysis of carbon dioxide respiration characteristics revealed distinct seasonal variability in reed respiration rates. Respiration rates were maintained at a level of 0.11-0.13 g·m-2·hr-1 during the spring months (March-May), reaching peak values during the summer months of June (0.22 g·m-2·hr-1) and July (0.25 g·m-2·hr-1), when growth was most vigorous. Thereafter, there was a gradual decrease from autumn, reaching its lowest level of 0.02–0.04 g·m-2·hr-1 during winter (November–December) when the aboveground parts died back. In the correlation analysis with environmental factors, soil temperature (Tsoil) was identified as the primary factor most significantly influencing respiration rate variation (r = .451, p < .05). In addition, air temperature demonstrated a significant correlation (r = .381, p < .05). Secondly, calculations pertaining to carbon storage revealed that the total carbon storage within the reed community was estimated at 23.76–33.66 tC/ha, comprising 3.96 tC/ha in aboveground biomass and 19.80–29.70 tC/ha in rhizosphere soil. This is equivalent to 87.20-123.53 tCO2/ha when converted to carbon dioxide equivalents. Thirdly, the economic value assessment indicated that applying voluntary carbon market credit prices resulted in the economic value of reed habitats ranging from a minimum of $849.33 USD to a maximum of $4,077.73 USD per hectare (ha). This study quantitatively assessed the carbon absorption and storage capacity of the reed beds in the Muan tidal flats of South Jeolla Province, scientifically demonstrating that reeds possess excellent blue carbon potential comparable to other halophytes. These results can serve as key empirical data for registering domestic salt marshes as new carbon sinks in the National Inventory Report (NIR) and IPCC inventories. Moreover, the calculated economic value can serve as a basis for securing the necessary funds and providing economic incentives for coastal wetland conservation and restoration projects through the voluntary carbon market, thereby contributing to diversifying the national carbon neutrality strategy. However, given that this study incorporates Tier-1 level estimates, it is imperative that subsequent research is conducted to establish a precise Tier-3 level database through long-term monitoring, incorporating direct measurement of soil organic carbon.
