일부 종(Aegiceras corniculatum (L.) Blanco, Avicennia marina (Forssk.) Vierh.)

Abstract

There has been one of increasing issues that it is addressing climate change due to global temperatures. In response to this, a lot of countries aims to achieve carbon neutrality by imposing greenhouse gas reduction obligations. Among various solutions, there is increasing interest in blue carbon based on marine ecosystems. In particular, domestically, such challenges have been made to enhance the ocean's carbon capture capacity by establishing plant communities in non-vegetated tidal flats. However, previous studies have highlighted the importance of soil texture for creating vegetated areas, indicating that soil texture significantly affects plant growth characteristics. Despite the need to expand carbon storage-based vegetation in non-vegetated tidal flats, there is still not enough research on an understanding of the growth and development of halophytes according to soil texture in domestic non-vegetated tidal flats. Furthermore, such halophytes in particular mangroves, which are the most significant resource for achieving blue carbon neutrality, are recognised by the international society as a marine carbon sink. Despite their carbon sequestration capacity and the wide range of ecosystem services they provide, including climate change mitigation, research on the growth characteristics and regional adaptation of mangroves is still insufficient. Therefore, this study examined the growth characteristics of mangroves (Bruguiera gymnorrhiza (L.) Lam) in non-vegetated tidal flats under various soil textures and explored the potential for expanding vegetation in domestic non-vegetated tidal flats. The experiment was conducted at the mesocozm experiment center of OO University located in OO County, Jeollanam-do. We measured the leaf mass, leaf length, root collar diameter, and chlorophyll content of mangroves according to soil texture. The results were as follows: First, there were differences in growth characteristics according to soil texture in terms of leaf mass, leaf length, root collar diameter, and chlorophyll content. For leaf mass, experimental group C (gravelly sand-local soil mix) showed the highest growth rate at -38.34%. For leaf length, experimental group A (sand-lower intertidal zone) at –6.61%, for root collar diameter, experimental group B (gravelly sand-upper intertidal zone) at 0.77%, and for chlorophyll content, experimental group D (sand-muddy area) at 19.02%. Second, this study highlighted the need for regional adaptability tests based on cold-resistant mangrove species according to various soil textures primarily based on predicting future seawater temperatures for climate change adaptation and carbon neutrality. In line with this, generally, mangroves are sensitive to low temperatures, but high possibly making regional adaptability challenging. It is because of some species, such as Aegiceras corniculatum (L.) Blanco and Avicennia marina (Forssk.) Vierh., have been found to be able to grow at slightly lower temperatures, suggesting the need to test and prioritise the adoption of cold-resistant species. Additionally, predicting the growth potential of domestic mangroves due to rising sea temperatures on the Korean Peninsula requires understanding the growth characteristics of species, especially their resistance to cold, based on soil texture and water temperature as variables. Concluding remark is that mangroves showed growth differences according to soil texture, indicating the need for further study based on varying cold resistant species and predicting the scenario of future sea water temperature. Nevertheless this study provides significant research data by laying the academic foundation for the expansion of vegetation in non-vegetated tidal flats and regional adaptability of mangroves in Korea.
