Abstract
This paper explores the design of the Amitabha Triad Descent Garden (Naeyeong-won) created within the precincts of Jeondeungsa Temple on Ganghwa Island, South Korea. The garden was constructed as part of the Garden Design Academy hosted by the Korea institute of Garden Design, and was intended to spatially embody the iconography of “naeyeong” (descent), in which the Amitabha Triad descends from the Pure Land to welcome sentient beings, a central motif in Pure Land Buddhism. The design was inspired by the 14th-century Amitabha Triad Descent Painting held in the Leeum Museum of Art. Amitabha Buddha, Avalokitesvara, and Kṣitigarbha were expressed through symbolic standing stones, while clouds were represented by massed plantings of herbaceous species. The design site was symbolically divided by an existing drainage channel into the celestial realm of the Buddhas and the earthly realm of mortals. As the first example of a descent(“naeyeong”) garden ever created in a Korean Buddhist temple, this project offers a significant precedent for the integration of Buddhist symbolism into garden design
