Abstract
The purpose of this study is to understand the flow and discourse structure of reports related to "elderly hatred" in the domestic media and to analyze how "elderly hatred" is formed and reproduced in Korean society. To this end, "elderly hatred" was set as a key search word using BIG KINDS, a big data-based news analysis system, and a total of 2,482 articles collected up to the latest point during the service period were analyzed. As for the analysis method, a keyword trend analysis was conducted to check the trend of changes in reporting by year and month, a word cloud analysis to identify the frequency and subject of key words in the text of articles, and a relationship analysis to derive a network of elderly hate discourse by visualizing the connection structure between nodes were also conducted. The main findings are as follows. First, as a result of the annual report volume analysis, reports related to "elderly hatred" increased the most in 2021, and the media's interest was rapidly expanding in line with the pandemic period and the period of major social conflict issues. Second, the monthly analysis showed an 'event-responsive pattern' in which the amount of coverage surged at a specific time, suggesting that elder hatred is a topic that receives significant short-term public opinion fluctuations depending on social issues and conflict situations. Third, in the word cloud analysis, words such as 'disabled', 'minority', 'social underdog', and 'aging' appeared centered, showing that elder hatred is a complex social problem closely linked to the discourse of hate among the vulnerable. Fourth, through the analysis of the relationship map, the 'elderly hatred' discourse formed a strong network with 'COVID-19', 'political circles', 'national human rights commission', and 'SNS', confirming that elder hatred spreads by interacting with structural factors such as infectious diseases, political conflicts, and online environments. This study can be used as basic data for protecting the human rights of the elderly, responding to hate expressions, and establishing media coverage guidelines by identifying that hate for the elderly is a complex phenomenon that occurs in conjunction with generational conflict, social vulnerable group problems, and digital hate expression.
