Abstract
This paper aims to criticize the Case theory suggested in GB and the Minimalist Program and propose an alternative notion of semantic cases in the light of semantic duality. The validity and the universality of the original notion of abstract Case became more threatened as the theory developed with the introduction of feature checking system as well as the elimination of S-structure. But the feature checking theory to license the Case has a theory internal problem as the nature of the Case feature itself is questioned. If the semantic relation between the head (the verb) and the terms (the arguments) is fundamental to the syntax, the semantic functions assigned to the terms suffice for the case-related interpretation of the arguments. We tentatively argue that the notion of abstract structural Case can be eliminated if the semantic dualism is supported by the semantic cases and the pragmatic functions suggested in the functional grammar.
