Abstract
This paper is concerned with the description of various aspects of case from the viewpoint of linguistic typology and language universals. Despite the apparent variety in case systems of natural languages, which often makes it difficult to describe them in a systematic fashion, some meaningful generalizations can be drawn from previous research on this issue and the related data given in this paper. First, case is realized in three different ways: by word order, NP-marking, and cross-referencing. Second, case is marked either on the head elements or on their dependents. Third, in relation to the case markings S (Subject), A (Agent), and O (Object), languages are divided into two groups, i.e., accusative and ergative languages. There are also mixed types of the two patterns, although they are not common. Finally, a hierarchy exists between cases. The three cases of nominative, accusative, and genitive are higher than other cases, such as dative or ablative. Even between the three main cases, there exists a hierarchy: nominative > accusative > genitive. Cases with higher ranking have greater priority in linguistic realization. With the hierarchy, the different developments of case systems in individual languages can be explained successfully.
