This study is aimed at exploring the rejection patterns at the cross cultural encounter scene between Korea and Japan when Japanese is used as a communication vehicle. Analysis is made to see what is the preferred rejection strategy and confirm what is similar or different from the rejection scene between first language speakers of their own, i.e., Korean and Japanese. The study results can be summed up as follows. (1)During rejection scene, Korean speakers use nearly twice as many strategies as Japanese counterparts. (2)During rejection scene of the cross cultural encounter, Japanese tend to reject all the way through the 2nd stage(phase) or even 3rd one regardless of whatever the reason may be. On the contrary, Koreans perform their rejection act in the irregular patterns to be hardly definable. (3)During rejection scene of the cross cultural encounter between Korea and Japan, the rate of using strategies, such as 「negative capability」, 「apology」, 「excuse」 considered as main rejection strategies between first language speakers of their own occur less frequently.
