Abstract

The previous leadership research has studied that ethical leadership influenced follower’s attitude and behavior. Since the study of Tepper & Taylor(2013), the recent research emphasize the necessity of considering trickle-down effect that ethical leadership flows from leader to follower. In this study investigating the trickle-down effects of second-level superior’s moral behavior, leader’s ethical leadership was used as the mediating variables of the relationships between second-level superior’s moral behavior and outcomes variables. A structural equation modeling(SEM) was employed to test the hypotheses. Using survey data collected from sample of 236 employees and 111 leaders in 27 organizations(company, university, public institution). The results of the empirical analysis are as follows. First, the paper shows that second-level superior’s moral behavior are positively related to leader ethical leadership(moral behavior, consistency across contexts). Second, leader’s moral behavior has effect on outcomes variables[organizational commitment(+), turnover intention(-), leadership effectiveness(+), perceived team performance(+)]. Third, leader’s behavioral integrity has effect on outcomes variables[organizational commitment(+), turnover intention(-), leadership effectiveness(+), perceived team performance(+)]. Fourth, leader’s consistency across contexts has effect on outcomes variables[organizational commitment(-), turnover intention(+), leadership effectiveness(-), perceived team performance(-)]. Finally, consistent with the proposed trickle-down model, the effect of second-level superior’s moral behavior on outcomes variables was mediated by leader’s moral behavior. The study findings were discussed along with managerial and theoretical implications and recommendations for future research and applications.
