본 논문은 다원주의 시대에 요청되는 가치 덕목인 관용의 도덕적 토대를 칸트의 도덕철학이 어떻게 제공하는가를 밝히고자 한다. 오늘날의 사회는 다원주의의 부정적 측면인 다양한 가치들이 충돌하는 현상을 보여준다. 관용 사상은 이러한 충돌을 해결하기 위한 대안이 될 수 있다. 이 관용의 존립 근거는 정치적, 혹은 전략적 차원이 아닌 도덕적 차원에서 밝히는 것이 적절하다. 따라서 이러한 작업은 관용의 의미를 분석함으로써 관용과 이에 대한 도덕적 토대의 연결점을 찾는 것으로부터 시작된다. 다원주의 사회에서 다양한 가치 담지자들이 상호 간에 존재하는 차이를 인식하고 서로를 존경할 수 있기 위해서는 관용이 필요하다. 왜냐하면 관용하는 주체와 관용되는 객체는 둘 다 인간성을 담지한 인간이기 때문이다. 인간성을 공유한 그들은 서로를 인정하는 관용을 발휘할 수 있는 능력도 또한 가지고 있다. 이러한 시각에서 본 논문은 도덕법칙의 원리로서 인간성을 심도 있게 논의한 칸트의 도덕 철학에 주목하고, 이것이 관용의 도덕적 토대를 제공할 수 있음을 분명히 하였다.
Abstract
This paper will make it clear that how Kant's moral philosophy offers the moral foundation for tolerance which is a demanded virtue in the time of the pluralism. The negative aspect of pluralism in the present age is that various values are in conflict. The alternative to solving this conflict is tolerance. It is reasonable to clarify the subsistence ground of tolerance from the moral view point, not from the political or strategic one. Therefore this work begins with analysing the meaning of tolerance and search for the connective factors between the tolerance and the moral foundation of the virtue. Tolerance is needed for those who hold the various values to recognize their differences and respect mutually. The tolerating subject and the tolerated object are all human beings holding humanity. They have humanity in common and also have the capacity to demonstrate tolerance and give each other a reciprocal approval. In this point of view, this paper arouses an attention to Kant's moral philosophy to explore humanity as one of the principles of moral law in depth, and expands a discourse on specifying the moral foundation of tolerance.
