Abstract

By 'morals' Descartes understood the highest and the most perfect moral system, which was the ultimate level of wisdom in Cartesian tree of philosophy. Notwithstanding he did not write a standard book or treatise on morals. The 'provisional moral code' is found in his early writing, Discourse on the Method. Why is it 'provisional'? Descartes's modernity is closely connected with the process of secularization. Can his moral stand be explained in terms of the secularization, too? In Passions also we can find the rational attitude reflected in the 'provisional moral code'. In this book Descartes presented the practical way for good life. He said that we had to use reason in order to understand the act of body and to work out the technical know-how which can control passions. We must go over the stoic conception of providence in respect of the curb upon passions. But we can't make out Descartes's genuine moral stand by those examinations alone. In Descartes the highest happiness consists in the possession of the supreme good. Here this supreme good is God. Descartes sought for the foundation and criterion in both truth and the good. He says that mere reason will fundamentally not be the true basis of morality. He recognized that reason depended on faith as far as morals was concerned. Hence his conception of reason and will can't be secularized completely in this regard. The theory of morals God excepted should be stopped at the negative theory of morals which treats of limited wisdom, self-control and a theme of this kind. There is no alternative but to remain in provisional moral code for the theory like that. Descartes's will can not be the perfect criterion of the instrumental utility for material welfare as well as of the autonomous self-determination. This barometer ultimately comes of God derived from Christian Metaphysics. In the final analysis, Descartes's moral stand is deeply rooted in devotion and piety. The secular virtue is to be positively completed through Christian virtue. Reason alone does not build up the foundation of the secularized scientific program, too. Christianity establishes the foundation of definitive moral code through the conception of original christian virtue in Descartes's moral stand. Descartes says that human free will is compatible with divine providence.
