Abstract
Carl Schmitt asserts that Malebranche's occasionalism has a deconstructive characteristic and thus, romanticism is able to be nicely defined in terms of his occasionalism. In fact, Malebranche insists that there may be no causal relation among natural things. In this sense, his occasionalism brings up a possibility that a subject of knowledge may be free from most of all objects of knowledge. We, if occasionalist, couldn't foresee the event E on the present of the event C, and further, could be free from the epistemological obligation to anticipate such a thing. This means that occasionalism may result in deconstructive epistemological attitude. In my opinion, however, occasionalism in itself may be a necessary condition for a deconstructive tendency of romanticism, but not a sufficient condition. If occasionalism could produce a deconstructive ideology, it should be jointed to voluntarism which put emphasis on subject's free will in the process of knowledge. Schmitt, of course, insists that romanticism is "subjectivized" occasionalism, and tries to find some deconstructive elements in the "free spirit" of this individual subject. But This free spirit is never essential to occasionalism. Malebranche, too, doesn't bring this free spirit into his philosophical system. For him, God, a subject, doesn't operate voluntarily the world of creatures. God is always under the restriction of his own "volontés générales". This may be a reason why we can't find any symptom of genuine deconstruction in his philosophy. We can find this symptom in Berkely's philosophy rather than Malebranche's, because Berkeley accepts occasionalism with the position of voluntarist. If our argument is persuasive, the subject, "free spirit" which Berkeley put in the center of his philosophical discourse, may be said to announce previously the postmodern romanticism and deconstructive characteristic.
