Abstract

According to Aristotle, the elements in this "infra-lunar" world which is our ordinary world of perception lie in an everlasting movement and change. An element is different from a substance as particular thing that is composite of matter and form. But elements are able to be called "the last substantive states" because of the mutual role of the sets of their intrinsic characters: the role of "symbolon" as matter, and the role of two contraries as form. Therefore the elements are to be the firm foundation of material things. However, if we follow the interpretation of Luc Brisson, the first subject in the series of change of things as ultimate substance could not be the elements but the "place" of elements. In fact, I argue, interpretations on the traditional position fail to notice the symbolon, one of the most important concepts in Aristotle's theory of elements, especially in that of the mechanism of mutual transformation of elemental characteristics. If Brisson wanted to attack the aristotelian concept of "matter as hypokeimenon (subject or substratum)" in the context of theory of elements, he should have to aim at symbolon. Because what plays the role of hypokeimenon in an elemental transformation is not the 'places' of elements, which are empty, but these symbola that are the common characteristics of the two elements taking part in this transformation. And if he had aimed at symbolon, he would have find the fact that, though symbolon plays the role of common 'base' in the mutual transformation of two elements, it is neither an "ultimate corporeal receptacle" nor the "prime matter" as so called "pure potentiality".
