Abstract

This paper is aimed to analyze the role and feature of Greek religious festivals on the basis of Plato's philosophy. It would be given us some suggestions for modern festival. First, Greek religious festivals include a feature by the 'communication' through the encounter etymologically. It is achieved communication between the gods and humans, and between humans and humans. It put an end to conflict and war between humans and bring peace through communication. Second, Greek religious festivals are aimed to the liberation of pain in the end. It had the purpose of pleasing the gods from the original, but also brought the results to pleasing humans. Plato claimed gods take care of human to be out of suffering and gave a relaxation through the festival. Humans can have real pleasure in a certain sort of activity expressing virtue by competition. Third, Greek religious festivals are related to Mousai, Apollo and Dionysos who managed to festivals. They have ability to heal the soul. The Greeks said that Mousai and Apollo are responsible to obtain the pleasure in various fields of art such as singing and dancing, and that we can make a purification through pity and fear in the tragedy belong to Dionysos ritual. Fourth, Greek religious festivals are related to longing to create the way of a new life away from the old life in personal aspects, and the desire to establish a new order away from the old order in social aspects, and to recover the new vitality of life and to organize new life in universal aspects. Fifth, the Greek religious festivals play a role to strengthen the bonds of community such as families, groups, and countries, and have an important political function to each community. They make to gather together Gods and humans, to overcome conflict and confrontation, and to form solidarity and mutual bond.
