동서고금을 막론하고 인간의 사회는 덕의 교육에 지대한 관심을 가진다. 왜냐하면 한 사회는 그것이 지향하는 가치에 따라 바람직한 구성원을 기르는 것을 교육의 목적으로 삼고, 개인은 자신이 속한 사회가 요구하는 지적, 인격적 가치들을 갖춤으로써 그 사회의 구성원으로 성장하기 때문이다. 그러나 아이들에게 어떤 교육을 어떻게 제공할 것인가는 쉽게 결정할 수 있는 일이 아니며, 더구나 지식을 가르치는 것을 넘어서 가치를 전수하는 문제는 모든 시대의 고민거리였다. 이 글은 고대 그리스에서 시대의 가치인 덕 교육에 대한 이론들을 살펴보고, 그것들이 어떻게 교육현장에 적용될 수 있었을까를 규명해보려는 시도로서, 플라톤과 차별화를 시도하는 아리스토텔레스의 작품에서 답을 찾아본다. 특히 아리스토텔레스가 『정치학』에서 미래의 시민을 위한 기초 교육을 법률로써 규정하여 공교육을 실시할 것을 주창하면서, 유독 음악 교육을 강조하고 있는 대목에 주목할 것이다.
Abstract
Human society is deeply interested in virtue education. It is because a society wants to bring up children according to its oriented values, and the children grow up to be good members having the intellectual and moral values demanded by the society. But for the virtue education, what we should teach and how we can reach our goals? These questions are not easy to answer. And, more than teaching knowledges, the problem of transmitting values to the future generations remains difficult in all ages. In this paper I will try to clarify how men taught virtues in ancient Greece, through the arguments in ethical works of Aristotle who tried to differentiate his theory from that of Plato. In particular, I will bring into focus the passages of Politics Book 8 where Aristotle emphasizes the education of music as a curriculum, at the end of advocating a public and civic education by polis for all children who are future citizens.
