고대 그리스 음악의 문화사적 조명: 아테네의 ‘대 디오니소스 제전’을 중심으로

본 연구는 기원전 6, 5세기경의 고대 그리스 음악을 ‘대 디오니소스 제전’이라는 종교축제 맥락에서 살펴보는 음악의 문화사적 개괄이다. 다신교 사회였던 고대 그리스에서 종교축제는, 특히 아테네에서의 ‘대 디오니소스 제전’은 도시민의 공동체 의식을 고취시키고 지역적인 통합을 강조하는 정치적 목적을 위해 도시 차원에서 거대하게 재조직된 공공 축제라고 할 수 있다. 음악은 축제의 필수요소였고, 또 축제에서의 음악은 당시 고대 그리스 음악의 다양한 유형들과 변화의 흐름을 잘 반영하고 있다. 음악과 시와 춤의 총체적 개념을 담은 ‘무시케’, ‘노래’ 중심의 음악 문화, 공동체의 한 목소리를 중시했던 합창대와 합창서정시, 시인-작곡가로서 중요했던 키타라 가수, 정제된 예술 형태로서의 디티람보스 찬가, 음악극으로 이해하는 고대 그리스 비극과 희극, 보다 전문화 되어 가는 아울로스 연주자의 비르투오소 면모, 그리고 ‘노모스’라는 전통적인 음악적 표준의 틀과, 그로부터 자유로워지려는 후대 음악가들의 노력, 음악에서의 감정 표현과 모방으로 나타나는 고대 그리스의 신 음악 경향 등은 대 디오니소스 제전에서 찾아지는 음악적 특징이자, 당시의 고대 그리스 음악 문화를 이해하는 중요한 핵심이 된다.
Abstract
This paper examines cultural aspects of the music of ancient Greece during the 5th and 6th B.C.E. in the context of religious festivals. Religious ritual of the polytheistic ancient Greece, especially the Athenian Great Dionysia, was public festivity that was politically reorganized by a polis to encourage citizens’ sense of belonging to polis and to emphasize regional integration. As a core component of such religious events, music used for the festival reflects various forms and changes of the ancient Greek music. The Great Dionysia is characterized with various musical features: Mousike as a comprehensive concept encompassing music, poetry, and dance; singing oriented music culture; choros and choral lyric that emphasized a voice of community; important a poet-composer, Kitharodos; Dithyrambos as a refined art form; music plays including tragedy and comic play; virtuosic aspects of aulos players with professionalism; nomos as the traditionally standardized musical frame; effort of later musicians to be free from nomos; and a tendency of ‘new music’ to express emotions in music through mimesis. These features are critical to understand music and culture of the time of the ancient Greece.
