헤스티아 의식을 통해서 본 그리스 종교의 이성주의적 측면에 대한 고찰

본 논문은 그리스에서 헤스티아 여신과 연관하여 펼쳐졌던 구체적인 종교 의식들 ―결혼식, 암피드로미아식, 선농제, 기근 축출식―이 어떠한 점에서 그리스인들의 이성주의 발달에 영향을 끼쳤는지를 고찰하고 있다. 그러한 고찰을 통하여, 본 논문은 다음과 같은 사실을 밝히고 있다. 1) 고전기의 그리스에서 주지주의적 변환 운동은 모든 면에서 태동되고 있다. 2) 주지주의적 변환 운동은 신화뿐만 아니라, 종교 의식 속에서도 발견되고 있다. 3) 사적 화덕으로서의 헤스티아는 개인적 차원에서 각 가정의 구성원들의 함께 살기의 원리로서 작용하는데, 그 원리가 실제로 어떻게 작용되는지는 결혼식암피드로미아식의 예에서 발견할 수 있다. 4) 공적 화덕으로서의 헤스티아는 국가적 차원에서 각 시민들의 함께 살기의 원리로서 작용하는데, 이러한 점은 선농제기근 축출식과 같은 의식이나 암피크티오니아 제도 등에서 발견된다. 이러한 고찰을 통하여, 우리는 헤스티아를 중심으로 펼쳐진 종교 의식들이 주로 한 가정 내지 국가의 새로운 구성원을 어떻게 받아들이고 또한 새로운 구성원으로 교육시킬 것인지에 대한 그리스인들의 염려를 담고 있다는 점에서, 다면적 그리스 이성주의의 한 면을 구성하고 있음을 알 수 있었다.
Abstract
The purpose of this study is to elucidate the relation between the religious rituals & the greek rationalism through the investigation of various rituals of Hestia. In the first chapter, we have analyzed the characteristic feature of the Greek rituals based on the principle of Therapeia & Deisidaimonia. Through this analysis, we have clarified the elements of rational thinking submerged in the substratum of greek religious mind, which relates the Hieros to the human. In the second chapter, we have scrutinized the role of Hestia as a patron goddess of individual hearth in the private domestic realm. Through the investigation of ‘thyein gamon’․Amphidromia․Ekthesis, it is clarified that Hestia plays a role of initiating & integrating the new member into the family(synoikismos). In the third chapter, we have investigated the role of Hestia as a patron goddess of public hearth(Hestia Koine) in the City-State. Through the examination of Bouzygia & Boulimosekselias, we have clarified that Hestia Koine as a meson of the polis plays an important role of maintaining the social order, integrating the new habitants into the polis. By this investigation, we arrive at the conclusion that the greek religious thinking, even if in the realm of pure rational knowledge can not be described as rational, in the realm of practical Metis has an deep effect on the formation of the greek rationalism.
