Abstract

Aristotle defines happiness as an activity of soul in accordance with the best and most final virtue. The virtues as excellences of human natural functions are divided into moral virtues and intellectual virtues. The moral virtues are the activities of having emotions and doing according to a means. The intellectual virtues are the faculties of reasonable cognitions as a human natural function. The intellectual virtues are made up of practical wisdom(phronēsis) and philosophical wisdom (sophia =nous+epistēmē). The practical wisdom is the faculty of deliberating and choosing the human practical lives and has relations with moral virtue. The philosophical wisdom contemplates truth itself. The contemplation is the human highest virtue, The life in accordance with it is the happy life. This is a dominant doctrine about Aristotle's conceptions of happiness. However, The life in accordance with all human virtues(containing moral virtue and intellectual virtues) is the happy life. This is a inclusive doctrine about Aristotle's conceptions of happiness. But as I say, since practice and contemplation, practical life and contemplative life are connected with each other, and the relation between both is not a means-an end but a constituent of end-an end, Aristotle happiness can be defined as a combination of practical life and contemplative life as soul's activities.
