Abstract
The Significance of Emotion in Aristotle's Virtue Theory This paper tries to contend that the emotion must be emphasized in the moral education of today's society, through the examination of Aristotle's ethics which recognized the importance of the emotion. Aristotle said that the practical syllogism which is a stage of the operation of the practical wisdom is a way expressing the content of the intuitive perception. The practical wisdom, for Aristotle, comes under the intellectuel virtues and has an affect on the formation of the moral virtues. But nowadays this intuitive perception , by and large, is regarded as a kind of the emotion, And Aristotle thought that emotions embody the moral judgements and appraisals. The choice, for him, is the combination of desire and reason, i.e. deliberative desire as a voluntary sphere. In this way he gives the cognitive explanation about the emotion, i.e. the emotion as an intentional state. The moral virtue in Aristotle consists of two phases. The one is a state of character which makes us aim at the right purpose, and a state in which good emotions as the natural virtues is refined and habituated. The other is a state of character concerned with the choice of right means, formed through the support of the practical wisdom. The emotion, for Aristotle, is the state of the character through the habit and therefore, the socialized modes of response. For the emotion is a second human nature developed by the habit. The significance of this Aristotle's virtue theory emphasizing the emotion does not diminish and rather nowadays its appropriateness is increasing more and more. This aspect is demonstrated through the position of the contemporary communitarians who recognize the importance of Aristotle's virtue theory and the role of the emotion in the enhancement of the morality of society.
