Abstract

Aristotle presents Eudaimonia as a premise of his ethics. In Nicomachean Ethics, he argues that there is the highest good, shows and agrees that it is eudaimonia by following opinions of most people. By function arguments, he insists that human good is aretē according to reason, his own function. In his assertion, eudaimonia is an activity with a complete aretē. Then aretē is divided two, that is, dianoētikas and ēthikas. In Nicomachean Ethics, from Ⅱ to Ⅸ, Aristotle presents very long and full arguments concerning this, but on that, Ⅵ. However, in Ⅹ, Ch. 7. and Ch. 8. he argue something different with Ⅰ, Ch. 7. He says that the complete eudaimonia is an activity of theōria. So, scholars have debated surrounding the conception of Aristotle's eudamonia. Inclusivism insists his eudaimonia is a composite with all human goods. On the contrary, who supports dominant meaning of eudaimonia interprets it as an life with sophia, a supreme aretē. In this paper, through analytic understanding of Aristotle's texts, Aristotle's true meaning on eudaimonia is uncovered.
