아리스토텔레스는 『니코마코스 윤리학』에서 인간의 ‘행복’에 대해 논의한다. 그는 1권 7-13장에서는 인간이 수행하는 다양한 모든 활동들의 총합을 행복이라고 말하지만, 10권 6-8장에서는 관조라는 한 가지 이성적 활동만으로도 행복이 가능한 듯이 말함으로써, 이 견해들 가운데 어떤 것이 아리스토텔레스의 진정한 견해인가에 대한 논란을 야기했다. 아래에서 나는 아리스토텔레스가 『영혼에 관하여』에서 소개했던 ‘영혼의 포용성’이란 개념을 토대로 하여, 각각 포괄론과 지배론이라 불리는 그의 발언들이 양립할 수 없는 견해들이 아니라 사실상 하나의 동일한 견해로 해석될 수 있다고 주장한다. 즉, 그가 행복에 필요한 영혼을 때로는 한 가지를 언급하고 때로는 여러 가지를 언급하는데, 하나를 언급할 때는 다수의 하위영혼들을 포용하는 상위영혼을 언급하는 것이므로 결국 그 두 가지 경우는 동일한 의미를 함축한다는 것이다. 이 논의를 통해, 우리는 비일관적으로 보이는 아리스토텔레스의 행복론이 사실상은 일관적이라는 결론을 내리게 된다.
Abstract
Aristotle in the Nicomachean Ethics discusses the concept of human happiness. However, since he in Book 1, chs. 7-13 appears to regard the sum of all the activities as happiness, whereas he in Bk. 10, chs 6-8 seems to say that contemplation is a sufficient condition for happiness, there has been a controversy concerning which one of the two views really represents Aristotle. In what follows, I shall bring in the conception of “the comprehensibility of the soul” introduced by Aristotle in the De Anima and claim on the basis of it that his views called inclusive thesis and dominant thesis, respectively, are not incompatible, but can be interpreted as one and the same view. That is, he sometimes mentions a single soul and sometimes various souls, but since when he mentions a single soul, he has in mind a higher soul which subsumes or includes various lower souls, both cases can be understood as having indeed one and the same connotation. Through this discussion, we can conclude that the seemingly inconsistent theory of Aristotle’s conception of happiness is in effect consistent.
