아리스토텔레스에게 행복과 외적 좋음의 관계는 다층(多層)적이다. 논자는 니코마코스 윤리학 1권 7장에서 행복의 정의로 제시된 ‘덕’에 기반한 행복론을 한 편으로, 외적 좋음들과 덕이 가지는 관계를 다른 한 편으로 그의 행복론을 통해 행복과 외적 좋음의 다층적 관계를 확인하고자 한다. 논자가 이해하기로 그가 외적 좋음이 행복에 미치는 관계를 논할 때, 그의 입장은 총 셋으로 정리될 수 있다. 첫째 1권 7장에서 행복의 ‘완전성’과 ‘자족성’ 조건을 제시하면서 행복을 이루는 구성요소를 ‘덕의 발휘’ 만으로 설명하는 부분이다. 이 관점은 그의 스승이었던 소크라테스나 플라톤으로부터 스토아로 이어지는 행복관과 크게 다르지 않다. 행복에 외적 좋음은 아무런 도움도 영향도 없음을 공언하는 단계이다. 둘째 어떤 외적 좋음들은 그것의 결여가 관련된 덕목들의 발휘를 “불가능하게” 하는 것들이다. 이는 첫째 관점과 반대로 행복을 위해 어떤 외적 좋음들이 “반드시 필요한” 구성요소임을 보여준다. 셋째로 대부분의 외적 좋음들은 있으면 행복에 도움이 되지만 없다고 해서 행복하기가 불가능하지는 않은 것들이다. 외적 좋음이 덕을 발휘하는 데 도움이 된다는 것을 인정하는 것과 덕을 발휘하는 것만으로 행복할 수 있다고 하는 것 사이에는 큰 간격이 존재한다. 논자는 하나의 방법론으로서 ‘필요조건’과 ‘충분조건’, 그리고 ‘확률적 조건’이라는 개념적 도구를 통해 외적 좋음과 행복이 갖는 다층적 관계의 체계화를 시도할 것이다. 논자는 또한 보다 근본적인 관점에서 그에게 좋음이 갖는 다양한 ‘가치’의 성격에 주목하여 외적 좋음과 행복이 갖는 다층적 관계를 구분함으로써, 기존의 해석이 왜 성공적이지 못한지를 보여줄 것이다.
Abstract
Aristotle's relationship between happiness and external goods is multilayered. I want to explore the multilayered relationship between happiness and external goods by examining his theory of happiness, which is based on the virtue-based definition of happiness given in NE 1, 7, on the one hand, and the relationship between external goods and virtue on the other. As I understand it, when he discusses the relationship between happiness and external goods, his position can be summarized in three ways. First, in NE I, 7, he presents the conditions of “completeness” and “self-sufficiency” of happiness, explaining the components of happiness as the “exercise of virtue” alone. This view is not very different from the view of happiness passed down from his teachers Socrates and Plato to the Stoics. It professes that no external good is any help towards or has any influence on happiness. Second, certain external goods are ones the absence of which “makes impossible” the exercise of the virtues involved. This shows that, contrary to the first view, some external goods are “necessary” components of happiness. Third, most external goods are those whose presence is conducive to happiness, but whose absence does not make it impossible to be happy. There is a large gap between recognizing that external goods are helpful for virtue and saying that virtue is the only way to be happy. As a methodology, I will attempt to systematize the multi-layered relationship between external goods and happiness through the conceptual tools of 'necessary conditions', 'sufficient conditions', and 'probabilistic conditions'. At a more fundamental level, I will also show why existing interpretations have not been successful in distinguishing the multilayered relationship between external goods and happiness by focusing on the nature of the different 'values' of good for Aristotle.
