섹스투스 엠피리쿠스의 회의주의- PH와 M에 대한 비교 분석을 중심으로 -

초록

섹스투스 엠피리쿠스는 2-3세기 활동했던 피론주의적 회의주의자로, 당대 그리스 철학자들 중에서는 보기 드물게 독특한 회의주의적 사상을 전개한 철학자이다. 그는 피론주의에 대한 대체 불가능한 자료인 『피론주의 개요』(PH)와 『독단주의자들에 반대하여』(M)의 저자이고, 독보적이고 독창적인 헬레니즘적인 철학자이기도 하다. 그의 철학은 크게 다음 3가지 특징을 가지고 있다. 첫째, 독보적이고 독창적인 철학자로서 섹스투스 철학의 특성은 M보다 PH에 잘 드러나 있다. 왜냐하면 PH가 M보다 더 후대에 집필된 문헌이며, 특히 PH Ⅰ에는 섹스투스 회의주의의 주요 개념인 ‘판단유보(epochē)’와 ‘마음의 평안(ataraxia)’ 그리고 ‘단언하지 않음(aphasia)’이 체계적으로 정리되어 있기 때문이다. 둘째, 섹스투스의 회의주의의 근간에는 판단유보 개념이 자리 잡고 있다. 이 때, 판단유보 개념은 탐구되는 대상들과 진술들에 내재된 설득의 동등한 힘에 근거해, 그 어떤 것도 긍정되지도 않고 부정되지도 않는다는 것을 뜻한다. 판단 유보를 실천하는 회의주의자에게는 마음의 평안이 우연히 도래하는데, 이는 회의주의자가 가질 수 있는 최고의 행복이기도 하다. 셋째, 섹스투스는 자신의 회의주의를 강하게 주장하면서도 어떻게 하면 그것을 독단주의의 늪에 빠지지 않은 채, 비독단적으로 표현할 수 있을까 하는 문제에 집중한다. 그 결과 다음 원칙을 발견한다. “회의주의자는 회의주의적 표현들을 진술함에 있어서, 자신에게 보이는 것을 기술하고, 독단적 믿음을 가지지 않고서 자신이 느끼는 바를 보고하며, 외부대상에 관해서는 결코 확언하지 않는다.”(PH Ⅰ 15) 그리고 그의 이러한 원칙에는 실재와 그것에 대한 회의적 표현법 사이에는 완전한 일치성이 존재하지 않는다는 전제가 내재되어 있다. 결론적으로, 섹스투스의 회의주의는 피론주의 철학의 완성태이다. 그리고 그가 제안하는 회의주의 철학과 그 철학에 기반 한 삶의 태도는 우리 인간이 도달할 수 있는 삶의 최고 경지를 보여준다. 이런 점에서, 그가 강조하는 회의적 삶의 태도는 독단과 편견에 사로잡힌 현대인들에게 하나의 새로운 삶의 태도를 제공해 준다고 할 수 있다.

Abstract

As a Pyrrhonian sceptic, Sextus Empiricus was a distinctive thinker when compared with other Greek masters of philosophy in the second or third century. He was the writer of Outlines of Pyrrhonism (PH) and Against the Mathematicians (M) which are indispensable works on Pyrrhonism. Under the tradition of initial scepticism, his original ideas are fully worthy of reconsideration by way of the three points enumerated below; First of all, the remarkable feature of his philosophy truly appeared in Outlines of Pyrrhonism(PH), rather than Against the Mathematicians(M) because PH was obviously written later than M and was also systematically arranged by his principal concepts: epoche, ataraxia, and aphasia. Secondly, according to Sextus, the concept of the suspension of assent is fundamental to Scepticism; if it is neither in assent nor in dissent due to the fact that objects have equal strength of conviction. Furthermore he claims that sceptics arrive first at suspension of assent and after that at tranquility, this is the apex of happiness which they can realistically pursue Thirdly, Sextus pays sharp attention to the question of how one can make a statement without arbitrariness, meanwhile he makes strong propositions in his own scepticism. As a result, he emphasizes and arrives at the principle that “... the most important point is that in putting forward these slogans the Skeptic is saying what seems to him to be the case and is reporting his pathos without belief, not firmly maintaining anything concerning what exists externally.”(PH Ⅰ 15) In this regard, the principle contains a major premise which entails no perfect coincidences between reality and its sceptical expressions. In conclusion, the scepticism of Sextus is a disparate and distinctive way of thinking and his philosophy and attitude on life idealistically shows us the highest stage of human life. Additionally the sceptical attitude on life which he firmly points out gives us a new form of life to liberate us from dogmatic and partial views.
