진리의 기준에 대한 피론학파의 논박 －『피론주의 개요』 2권을 중심으로－

피론학파인 섹스투스 엠피리쿠스는 『피론주의 개요』의 2권에서 교조주의자들의 ‘진리의 기준’을 논박한다. 이 논박은 아카데미아학파 회의주의자들이 스토아학파와의 논전에서 보여주었던 논박과 다르다. 아카데미아학파가 스토아학파의 인식론만을 대상으로 하여 변증적으로 논박하는 데에 비해 섹스투스는 진리의 기준 문제를 특정한 누군가의 주장에 대한 반박이 아니라 종합하여 일반적으로 다루고 있다. 섹스투스는 이러한 일반성에 입각하여 진리기준을 구분하고, 구분된 각 측면을 논박해낸다. 회의적 논박의 적용대상이 특정한 학파나 철학자의 주장이 아니라 일반적인 주제로 변화하였고, 따라서 그의 논박은 고대철학의 인식론적 논의 전체를 대상으로 삼게 된다. 섹스투스는 고대철학의 인식에 관한 이론들이 의지하고 있는 진리의 기준이 인식의 주체와 인식의 수단, 그리고 인식을 위한 표상으로 분류된다고 본다. 섹스투스는 이들 각각을 철저히 논박하면서 피론학파가 가진 논박의 전형을 보여준다. 아그리파의 논변형식에 따라 논박하고, 단계적 논파의 전략을 구사한다. 이 방법을 통해 진리의 기준에 관한 모든 요소가 빠짐없이 논박된다. 또한 이러한 진리의 기준에 관한 논박이 진행되는 과정에서 피론학파의 철학적 성격을 파악할 수 있는 단초가 제공된다. 일상의 삶과 유리된 철학적 논의를 배제하려는 피론학파의 실천철학적 면모가 드러나고, 특정한 대상이 아니라 철학 자체를 대상으로 논박하므로 인식의 한계를 보여주려는 그들의 철학적 목표가 드러난다.
Abstract
In the Outlines of Pyrrhonism book II, the Sextus Empiricus reputes the dogmatic "criterion of truth". This reputation is different from that the Academia skeptics have shown in the debate with the stoics. In contrast to Academia, which is a dialectical refutation of the stoic epistemology only, Sextus generally treats the criterion of truth. He divides criterion on the basis of this generality and reputes each divided one. The object of skeptical reputations has changed into a general thing, not an argument of a particular school or philosopher, and thus his reputation is directed to the entire epistemological discussion of ancient philosophy. Sextus categorizes the criterion of truth as the subject of recognition, the means of recognition, and the representation for recognition. he reputes each of these and shows the typical refutation of the pyrrhonian school. And he disputes dogmatic arguments according to Agrippa's tropens and uses a strategy of phased debate. Through this method and strategy, all claims about the criterion of truth are reputed. In addition, in the process of this dispute, the philosophical features of pyrrhonian skepticism can be grasped. Through this reputation, he reveals the philosophical aspect of the pyrrhonian skepticism to exclude the philosophical argument irrelevant to everyday life, and his philosophical goal to show the limits of our cognition.
