Abstract

This paper explains Socrates' political philosophy, which can be found in the Apology and the Crito. The two dialogues discuss contradictory claims about the same theme of civilian political obligation. In the Apology, Socrates disobeys the unjust command of the state, but the Crito insists on obeying the order of the state on the basis of the subsist of the community. This problem, which means the conflict between the state and the individual, is called the Antigone problem. Regarding this subject, Socrates was known as a scholar who advocated moral individualism, even though he was a member of the ancient Greek society. In order to understand Socrates, this paper studied the historical background and the political philosophy described in the dialogue. According to Arendt, Socrates insisted on private individualism in order to solve the problems of the ancient Athenians at that time, and the goal of private individualism is the subsist of the community. This is the central theme of the Crito, and also reveals the communitarian aspect of Socrates in the Apology. Thus, Socrates's political philosophy is interpreted to maintain a communitarian attitude that prioritizes citizens' communities.
