언어, 장소, 환대, 이 세 용어, 세 개념이 주는 인상과 느낌은 무엇일까? 언어와 장소는 우리에게 낯선 개념들은 아니다. 아마 문제는 환대일 것이다. 현대철학에서 ‘환대’의 위상이나 좌표는 어디인가? 우리는 그 좌표를 명확하게 찍어보기 위해 ‘난민’이라는 보다 구체적인 문제영역을 설정하려고 한다. 이렇게 말하고 보면 난민을 위한 환대, 난민의 환대라는 직접적이고 신속한 결론을 내기보다는 우리는 그 문제 영역에서의 환대는 언어의 환대, 그 다음으로 장소의 환대라는 우회로를 거쳐야 한다고 주장하려고 한다. 언어의 환대는 번역을 통한 언어의 환대를 의미하고, 장소의 환대는 물리적 장소와 삶의 공간의 의미에서 환대는 물론이고 ‘세계’(Welt)와 ‘사이’(inter-esse)의 형성이라는 의미도 고려되어야 함을 주장하려고 한다. 끝으로 언어 환대와 장소 환대라는 개념들이 서로 간에 지니는 긴밀한 관련성을 적절한 예를 찾아간략하게나마 그려보는 것으로 만족하고자 한다. 실상 모든 환대는 그것이 어떤 경우에 발생하든 그 정의상 그리고 그 개념상 어느 정도 장소의 환대이다. 우리 문제제기의 순서가 먼저 ‘장소의 환대’, 그 후에 ‘언어(들)의 환대’였어야 했는지도 모른다. 하지만 장소의 환대로 바로 갈 수 없는 이유는 지구상에서 그 장소는 어디든 개별 자연 언어와 무관하거나 관계없는 장소는 없기 때문이다. 인간은 세계-내-존재임과 동시에 언어-내-존재이다. 언어와 장소라는 두 문제, 언어의 환대와 장소의 환대라는 두 환대의 성격이 가장 격렬하게 접점이 되는 문제영역이 바로 난민 문제의 영역라고 판단된다. 필자는 이점을 국내의 선행연구를 통해 난민임(refugeehood)을 인정받는 첫 관문과 그 과정을 거치며 우리 사회에 정착하는 두 번째 관문의 차원으로 나누어 간략하게 접근하고자 한다. 비록 언어 환대의 문제가 보다 극명하게 드러나는 지점이 난민의 영역이라는 필자의 판단에서 이런 문제제기를 하는 것이지, 난민 문제가 언어 환대의 유일무이한 지점이라는 주장은 할 수 없다고 본다. 우리가 앞으로 하려는 작업은 방금 위에서 제기한 두 관문과 같은 구체적인 문제를 아주 구체적인 수준에서 해결하려는 노력을 하는 정책적 방향은 아니며, 언어 간의 비대칭과 제도적 해결에 있어서 언어를 바라보는 태도, 지향, 관계설정이라는 보다 철학적이고 인문학적 방향임을 전제한다.
Abstract
What kind of impressions do these three terms, or concepts, give: language, place, hospitality? Language and place are familiar concepts to us, but perhaps the problem lies within hospitality. Where does the status for ‘hospitality’ lie within the realm of modern philosophy? Let us set a more specific boundary for this problem with the term ‘refugee’ to closely pinpoint its coordinates. When put in this way, rather than quickly jumping to a direct conclusion of hospitality for or of refugees, it must be argued that we should take a detour from the hospitality of language then to the hospitality of location within this context of hospitality. Hospitality of language means a linguistic one through translation. Hospitality of place would mean a physical place and a space of living, but we should also consider the formation of ‘the world (welt)’ and ‘the in-between (inter-esse)’. To conclude, let us briefly find suitable examples of the close relevance between the hospitality of language and the hospitality of place. Practically, all hospitality, no matter what circumstances it occurs in, is by definition and concept tied to the hospitality of location, to some extent. Perhaps the order of our questioning should have first been the ‘hospitality of place’ then the ‘hospitality of language(s)’. However, the reason why we cannot jump directly into the hospitality place is because there is no place on earth that is irrelevant or unrelated to each individual natural language. Humans exist as both beings-in-world and beings-in-language. It can be concluded that the context of the refugee problem lies within the area where the characters of both the hospitality of language and place most fiercely cross one another.
