내전‧전쟁에 이어 기후변화로 인한 해수면 상승, 가뭄‧태풍 등의 영향으로 이재이주 현상이 초국적인 것이 되었다. 본고는 선행된 난민 수식 조어의 발명과 수집, ‘hospitality’의 번역어 ‘환대歡待’를 포함한 난민 인접 어휘들의 전이 현상 연구들을 일괄 검토하는 방식으로 난민에 대한 사유를 하고자 한다. ‘migration’과 ‘border’의 의미 변화 분석과 ‘hospitality,’ ‘community,’ ‘immunity’의 개념 추적, 생물지리학 용어 ‘refugia’의 인문학적 사용은 언어의 중요성과 한계를 부각시킨다. 언어는 인간의 사고체계를 구축하지만, 완전히 견고하지도 않다. 한 예로, 국제 난민법은 국가 차원의 난민 수용을 권고하지만 비강제적이며, 국제 정세, 국내 정치 등과 얽혀있다. 그러나 어원은 인간의 숙명적인 이야기를 담고 있다. 그리스어 기원의 ‘phármakon’에서 나온 ‘pharmacon,’ ‘hospitality’의 라틴어 어원 ‘hospes’는 인간의 의식, 경험, 윤리의 역사성을 포함한 어휘이다. 그밖에 강과 산의 형세를 따라 형성되었던 비강제적이었던 ‘border’는 강화된 국민 국가에 기초한 법적 개념으로 변화되었으며, 마침내 ‘통로’, ‘통과’와는 정반대의 의미를 갖게 되었다.
Abstract
The aftermath of civil wars and conflicts, coupled with climate change-induced phenomena like rising sea levels, droughts, and typhoons, has led to a global phenomenon of displacement and migration. This article reviews various studies on the invention and collection of precedent refugee modifiers, including the transition phenomena of adjacent vocabularies such as “hospitality,” “community,” and “immunity.” Analyzing the concept of “hospitality” following the semantic shifts of terms like “migration” and “border,” along with the humanistic use of the biogeographic term “refugia,” highlights both the absolute importance and the insignificance of language in human affairs. Language constructs human thought processes but is not entirely robust. For instance, while international refugee law advocates for refugee acceptance at the national level, it remains non-coercive and is intertwined with international relations and domestic politics. However, the etymology of words carries a profound human narrative. Words such as “pharmacon,” originating from the Greek “Phármakon” and “hospitality,” derived from the Latin “hospes,” encompass a rich spectrum of meanings, embodying human consciousness, experience, and ethical histories. Additionally, the non-coercive “borders” formed along rivers and mountains have evolved into legal concepts based on fortified nation-states, ultimately acquiring meanings diametrically opposite to “passage” and “transit”.
