Abstract
Putnam, through ingenious thought experiments, defiantly argues that meaning is not in the mind of the thinker. The point of Putnam’s argument is that meaning does not depend on the individual psychological state, but on the social division of labor, and that the extension of linguistic expressions, such as natural nouns, depends on the nature of things in the real world. According to him, traditional theories of meaning have overlooked the point. Despite various reactions to Putnam’s argument, in my view, Putnam overlooked the anti-psychologism of Frege’s theory of meaning. Furthermore, my thought experiment of the linguistic division of labor in the future society opposes Putnam’s core claim that “the meaning is not in the head.” But in order, I will first examine the grounds for the argument for externalism of meaning—the twin earth and elm tree-beech tree thought experiment, the linguistic division of labor, indexical and rigidity—and then examine the various responses to the argument.
