Abstract

This article examines the concepts of wuxin (無心, no-mind) and ganying (感應, responsive resonance) in the Zhuangzi, focusing on how existence is formed and transformed through relational processes. While previous studies have often treated wuxin as a psychological or meditative state and ganying as unity with the Dao or an ethical attitude, this study approaches the two concepts as a single interacting structure. It argues that wuxin and ganying function as core principles of Zhuangzi’s understanding of existence beyond a purely cultivation-based framework. Through close analysis of key chapters of the Zhuangzi, including “Renjianshi,” “Qiwulun,” “Dechongfu,” “Yingdiwang,” and “Tiandao,” the article argues that wuxin operates as an ontological condition of openness that prevents fixation on identity, value, or judgment, while ganying refers to situational responses that emerge within this openness. In particular, discussions in “Renjianshi” and “Tiandao” highlight the practical and cosmological dimensions of this openness, while the mirror metaphor in “Yingdiwang” illustrates that ganying is not an intentional or normative act but a relational event shaped by context. On this basis, the article reconstructs the relationship between wuxin and ganying not as a linear sequence, but as an ongoing process in which existence continuously adjusts itself within relationships. This structure carries ethical implications without forming a system of moral rules: ethics in the Zhuangzi concern how one responds within relations rather than what one ought to do. In this sense, Zhuangzi’s thought presents an ethics grounded in relational responsiveness rather than normative obligation.
