Abstract
J. S. Mill’s concept of ‘the art of life’ reveals the essential foundation of his utilitarianism, which is differentiated from J. Bentham’s. His relatively more disputed ‘qualitative distinction of pleasures’ should be understood in light of this foundation. The initial indication of ‘the art of life’ can be found in his description of his so-called ‘mental crisis’ and his process of overcoming it detailed in his Autobiography. In this paper, I will first briefly discuss the context in which this mental crisis in his youth led to the concept of ‘the art of life,’ and the context in which this concept formed the foundational difference between Mill and Bentham. Next, I will examine several conflicting views on the relationship between the three branches; namely morality, prudence and aesthetics; that make up ‘the art of life’, and further the relationship between these branches and the principle of utility. Through this discussion, I will explain the so-called ‘perfectionist’ interpretation which argues that Mill considered the development and exercise of the capability or susceptibility to distinguish and feel quality to be more important than the quality of pleasure itself. Based on this interpretation, I will suggest that his utilitarianism focuses not only on the public/social conditions that maximize the pleasure people actually feel, but also on the public/social conditions that comprehensively account for the development of the capability to feel higher pleasures.
