인간의 삶에서 바람직한 상태를 최대한 산출하는 것을 가장 근본적인 규범으로 간주하는 밀의 관점에서, 그 규범을 추구하는 데 효과적인 인지적, 성격적, 실천적 역량을 기르는 것이 필요하다. 밀은 이를 삶의 기술이라 칭하고, 그 세 영역으로 모든 이의 이익을 섬세하게 분별하는 영역, 타인의 권리에 속하는 중요한 이익을 우선하여 존중하는 영역, 주변 대상과 인간 행위의 미적 특질을 향유하는 영역을 제시한다. 나는 『여성의 종속』에서 완전한 남녀평등 하에서 부부가 서로를 존중과 배려로 대하는 상태로 밀이 묘사하는 결혼의 이상이 세 영역의 삶의 기술이 가장 종합적이고 구체적으로 드러난 이념임을 보인다. 특히 삶의 기술에서 핵심적인 성격이 결혼의 이상에서도 중요하다. 동등한 타인과 교류할 때 발생하는 다양한 혜택과 자기 발전의 자극을 가려내는 분별력, 서로의 권리를 자발적으로 존중하는 사회성, 타인의 행동과 교류의 미적 특질을 향유하고 서로가 주는 배움을 즐기는 감수성이 그것으로, 이는 공리의 종합적인 추구를 가능케 하는 심적 바탕이자 그 자체 공리의 중요 요소들이다.
Abstract
The Art of Life is what Mill has to offer as the cognitive and practical capacities that individuals need to respond to and pursue desirable ends. Its three departments are: (1) Prudence: a capacity for fine discrimination of many facets of utility in self and others; (2) Morality: fellow-feeling, the social part of human nature that leads people to respect others’ vital rights with the utmost priority; (3) Aesthetics: the susceptibility to style and details in objects and acts that make up beauty and nobleness. The ideal of Marriage in Subjection of Women is Mill’s depiction of ‘the perfect equality’ between spouses. I argue that this ideal is the most holistically fitting manifestation of the Art of Life. It embodies three characters at the basis of the Art of Life; an insight into the various benefits of living with equals and the inclination to share them; care and sympathy for one’s partner and a readiness to honor his/her rights; and the sensitivity to aesthetic qualities of a marriage relationship and the disposition to enjoy them.
