존 스튜어트 밀(J. S. Mill)은 인간 사회의 진보와 향상에 대한 신념으로부터 인간의 지적․정신적 성취를 위한 교육의 중요성을 역설했다. 그는 좁은 의미의 교육과 넓은 의미의 교육으로 구별하는데, 후자의 교육은 인간 발달에 영향을 미칠 수 있는 모든 것을 포괄한다. 그래서 교육은 그가 다룬 모든 영역에 광범위하게 침투되어 있는 주제이다. 공리주의라는 공통된 사상적 기반에도 불구하고, 밀은 제러미 벤담과는 차별된 교육 개념과 그것의 역할을 주장하는데, 나는 우선 그들의 교육 개념의 차이를 고찰하고, 이러한 차이로부터 비롯되는 밀의 교육철학에 대한 의혹들을 다룬다. 지적․정신적 향상과 도덕적․시민적 자질의 함양에 대한 집착, 그리고 이러한 향상과 함양을 위한 정치체제의 구성과 그것의 교육적 기능에 대한 강조는 그의 사상이 뿌리 깊은 엘리트주의 내지는 강한 부권주의의 경향을 내포하고 있다는 의혹을 불러일으켰다. 이 논문에서 나는 그의 사상에서 이러한 의혹을 초래한 몇몇 지점들을 살펴보고, 그것들과 관련된 몇몇 엇갈린 해석들을 비판적으로 검토할 것이다. 마지막으로 이러한 검토를 바탕으로 그의 정치사상의 엘리트주의적 측면에 대한 소견을 밝힐 것이다.
Abstract
Upon the conviction of the progress and improvement of human society, J. S. Mill stressed the importance of education for the intellectual and spiritual accomplishments of human beings. He made a distinction between the narrow and broad senses of education, and the latter sense of education embraces whatever is that can influence human development. The subject of education was thus permeated into almost all fields of inquiry he explored. Notwithstanding their shared foundation of thinking, i.e., utilitarianism, Mill claimed unique ideas of education and of its role that can be clearly discriminated from Bentham's. In this paper, I shall first examine a few noticeable differences between their ideas of education, and then consider some suspicions about Mill's philosophy of education. His obsessive remarks on the intellectual and spiritual improvement and the cultivation of moral and civic qualities, and further his emphasis on the establishment of a political system conducive to these improvement and cultivation and the educational function of that system, have aroused a suspicion that deep-rooted elitism or strong paternalism is involved in his political thought. In this paper I shall scrutinize some of those spots in his ideas which might bring such a suspicion, and then critically evaluate some opposing interpretations about them. Based on that scrutiny and evaluation, lastly, I shall briefly state my opinion on the elitist aspect of Mill's ideas.
