Abstract
The purpose of this paper is to examine the difficulties in the existing interpretation of Max Scheler’s idea of the person and to propose a more adequate and well-balanced understanding of that idea. As is well known, in his late work; The Human Place in the Cosmos, Scheler regards the traditional philosophical question of “What is the human being?” as the core theme of philosophy, and he unequivocally answers this question with the notion of the person. The person is fundamentally understood as the center of spiritual and mental acts. Whether Scheler intended it or not, this has led to an overly spiritualist interpretation of his idea of the person. However, a multifaceted consideration of Scheler’s philosophy shows that the standard way of interpreting his idea of the person needs to be revised. That is, according to Scheler, the realization of the person demands both the spiritual dimension (spirituality) and the vital dimension (vitality). What makes the person, as a center of spiritual activity, possible is an impulse through vital energies and the sublimation of such an impulse. In this respect, personal spirituality or mentality is not simply something that appears in a living being called the human; rather, the person at the spiritual level is being carried out and realized on the basis of forces at the vital level. In short, for Scheler the person is both spiritual and vital. This interpretation of Scheler’s idea of the person is significant in that it not only enables a more adequate understanding of his philosophy itself, but also stimulates and promotes its contemporary application.
