Negative expressions usually represent simple negations of the content of the proposition, and then the meaning is differentiated and developed into other semantic functions or pragmatic functions. In particular, in the dialogue structure, “아니” appears alone at the beginning of the sentence and is not only used as a simple negative answer, but also expands the scope of use to a discourse marker. However, most of the current machine translations do not properly capture the differentiated functions of “아니” and all of them are mechanically translated as “不是” or “不”. Starting with this problem consciousness, this paper aims to analyze the meaning and conversation function of “아니” appearing alone at the beginning of sentence using the conversation between panels and cast members of Netflix <Single’s Inferno> as analysis data, and to reveal the meaning and differences of “아니” and “不是”. The research results of this paper are expected to be used as a certain reference for the use of Korean-Chinese machine translation.
