Abstract

This article explores a possibility that China’s recent efforts to internationalize its currency, yuan, would lead to replacing the U.S. dollar in 2025 as a key international currency. The issue looms larger than ever before in the context of the current global financial crisis, which shows the vulnerability of the U.S. economy and its associated concern with the future role of the U.S. dollar in the world economy. In the manner of theory-based informed futurology, this article first identifies economic and geopolitical determinants of a key international currency. Then it moves onto applying these theoretical insights to China’s capacity and willingness to challenge the U.S. dollar. Findings suggest that Chinese yuan is not likely to be a substitute for the U.S. dollar in the world economy by 2025, though it will have achieved the status of a regional key currency in East Asia. China will not exceed the U.S. in its economic and geopolitical capacity to make yuan a key international currency. Neither will China be likely to form an unequivocal willingness to challenge U.S. dollar hegemony.
