Abstract
Mount Potalaka in East Asia, the dwelling of Avalokitesvara, has been defined in several ways. It has been viewed as either a mythical place isolated from this world or as an actual pilgrimage site that can be reached through physical travel. This latter definition was made after a specific geographic site was compared to Mount Potalaka and designated it the land of Avalokitesvara. Mount Putuo in the East China Sea is an example of such a comparison. This paper examines the religious meanings behind the mundane materialization of Mount Potalaka and its reinterpretation through Mount Putuo and a Yuan painting titled Budaluojia Guanyin xianshen shengjing tu (hereafter, shengjing tu), which illustrates this place. The visual characteristics of shengjing tu reveal the purpose of its production. At first glance, the painting seems to be a picturesque map as its style with detailed place name entries is similar to contemporary printed maps. However, certain sites, such as the Putuo Temple and the Tidal Sound Cave, have exaggerated scales and there are inconsistent cardinal directions, both of which imply that the intention had not been to provide geographic information; rather, by visualizing the holy sites associated with the folk legends and various pilgrims, it appears they may have intended to depict Mount Putuo as both a sacred place and an accessible pilgrimage site. Regardless of their intention, the later inscription indicates that shengjing tu was used in Avalokitesvara confession rituals in Japan as Mount Potalaka, while Mount Putuo in China was reinterpreted for this ritualistic context. Shengjing tu hung in the confession ritual in Japan and Japanese ritual manuals also mention Mount Putuo to be the dwelling place of Avalokitesvara. Furthermore, it indicates that Mount Putuo was seen by the Japanese not as just a pilgrimage site in this world but as a sacred place. Shengjing tu and its use in Japan demonstrate how Mount Putuo in China, which is a mundane Mount Potalaka, was reinterpreted under the Japanese Avalokitesvara worship system by changing and combining the notions surrounding Mount Potalaka.
