Abstract

This study tries to develop the scale of customer experience in retail stores from a perspective of holistic customer experience and to empirically investigate the effect of customer experience in retail setting using the developed scale. The major findings from empirical analysis are as follows. First, customer experience in retail stores is comprised of four components - hedonic, economic, symbolic, and relational experience. Hedonic experience can be obtained from entertainment and exploration of shopping behavior while economic experience from monetary savings and efficiency. Symbolic experience focuses on communication of self-concept through shopping at specific stores. Relational experience means sense of belonging and community spirit which customers experience from shopping at certain retail stores. Hedonic and economic experience are personal while symbolic and relational experience are social dimension of customer experience. Second, customer experience in retail stores has a positive effect on store attitude which increases revisit intention. This paper extends the scope of the study on customer experience in retail setting by generating the scale of customer experience in retail stores and testing the effect of customer experience empirically. The results of this research can provide useful implications for practitioners to build successful strategies on customer experience management.
