Abstract

The purpose of the current study was to analyze the character effect on the sense of social presence in multimedia learning environment. In order to investigate the character agent effects in the multimedia learning environment, the researchers developed multimedia learning contents, and implemented the program at the actual school environments. It is likely to difficulty for learners to feel social presence in the multimedia learning environment due to the psychological distance, caused by the lack of face-to-face interactions. The study, therefore, investigated how the elementary students feel the sense of social presence when they study with the multimedia learning program, utilizing an animated character agent imitating a real instructor. The subjects were 80, second graded elementary school students, enrolled in two classes, randomly selected from the C elementary school located in Kyung-gi province. The multimedia program under the control group presented the learning contents through texts and narrations. That of treatment group, on the other hand, presented the learning contents through a character agent in addition to the texts and narrations. The researcher conducted the experiment for three weeks by assigning the subjects in one class to the control group, those in the other class to the treatment group. According to the experiment results, although subjects both in the control and treatment groups studied the same multimedia learning contents, they sensed the social presense differently with statistical significance. The average score of the sense of social presence under the treatment group was higher than that of control group with statistical difference. The study, therefore, concludes that the use of character agent in multimedia learning environment is effective in providing more sense of social presence.
