Abstract
The purpose of this study was to identify the effect of realism (image, voice, and gesture) and conversational narration on persona perception of pedagogical agents. The types of pedagogical agent can be classified into two major groups: 1) talking head and 2) embodied agent. Because of the different characteristics of two types of pedagogical agents, two experiments were conducted. The experiment 1 was conducted for a talking head with the realism of image and voice, and the types of content. There was no significant difference between the variables on the persona perception except by the types of content. When a story based content was provided with a pedagogical agent, persona effects were also increased. The experiment 2 was conducted for an embodied agent, gesture was included to one of the independent variables. Moreover, narration style was also tested to identify the effect between descriptive and conversational narrations. There were significant interaction effects across all of the dependent variables of persona effect. It was concluded that when a realistic image was given, conversation and non-gesture agent helps learners to increase their persona perception. This result indicated that if a pedagogical agent had a high degree of realism, then a learner's expectation of gesture is also increased. Thus, realistic looking agent should have highly realistic gesture too.
