Abstract
The use of digital humans that closely resemble real humans is increasingly popular in e-learning interaction design. This study aims to explore the design principles of effective digital humans, examining their teaching presence and the impact on learning when used as tutors. For this purpose, an experimental study was conducted, dividing participants into three groups: those taught by real instructors, those taught by digital doubles of instructors, and those taught by generic digital humans. The participants were 63 learners in their twenties who had experienced e-learning, with 21 participants in each instructor type group. Learners attended three five-minute lecture segments, followed by a survey. The collected data underwent multivariate and one-way analysis of variance. The results showed that there were differences in teaching presence based on instructor type. Real instructors had higher perceptions than generic digital humans, and there was no significant difference between instructor digital doubles and real instructors. Secondly, real instructors were found to have higher learning effectiveness compared to that of both digital doubles and generic digital humans. Thirdly, learners perceived higher levels of presence and curiosity for digital doubles than for generic digital humans. These findings demonstrate positive factors for perceiving and trusting digital doubles as instructors. They provide a valuable foundation for exploring the characteristics of digital humans and designing content, laying the groundwork for future educational use of digital humans.
